Hess is an absolute monster in the wine industry. Starting in 1978, Donald Hess acquires his first land on Mount Veeder, eventually establishing HESS COLLECTION in 1986. Over the next three decades, Hess would grow his small winery into a large empire including, several different labels (under Hess) and family-owned wineries spanning from California, Argentina and South Africa. Today, Hess Family Wine Estates is recognized as one of the premier family-owned and family-led companies in the world of wine.
The wine that we are offering today, 2016 Hess Collection NAPA VALLEY Chardonnay, would be considered their mid-tier chardonnay. It’s already an absolute value for Napa Valley fruit at $22/bottle but at $13.95/bottle – you might just feel like you are stealing!!!
Director of Winemaking, David Guffy – WINEMAKING – “We take care in farming the Su’skol vineyard in order to develop fruit with bright acidity and balance, and to showcase the impact of the moderate temperatures influenced by nearby San Pablo Bay. We choose to focus on the aromatic and delicate musque clone, which requires a light touch with both oak and malolactic fermentation. To highlight this beautiful clonal material, we put 70% of the blend through stainless fermentation to retain fresh flavors of pear and nectarines and preserve the wine’s natural acidity. So as not to overwhelm the blend, the remaining 30% sees just a light touch of oak–9% new (French) oak–and only 30% of the overall blend is allowed to undergo secondary fermentation. Aged for 9 months in barrels and lees stirred weekly for 4 months, results in a textured and viscous wine that offers aromas of jasmine and honeysuckle, complemented by stone fruit flavors enveloped in smooth, creamy notes of vanilla and lemon meringue.”
Executive Chef, Chad Hendrickson – PAIRINGS – “This wine pairs well with poached or grilled seafood, shrimp or crab with spicy aioli, baby greens tossed in citrus honey vinaigrette, avocados, fruit salsa, shaved fennel, tangerines and triple crème cheeses.”
Cheers,
The CV Crew
