At Just $14.99 Each, Beware of “Substance” Abuse
The 2013 Wines of Substance Cabernet Sauvignon was one of Drew’s major scores in 2015 in his quest to find wines that perform significantly past their price point. This one, from Charles Smith of Walla Walla, WA, makes Drew look like a true savant. He was able to score 20 cases of this juice that we blew out the door at $14.99 per bottle on a purchase of six.
Makes Santa Gary sad to know that it was gone so quickly. . .kinda like Christmas Day. Here, then gone in an instant. Also referred to simply as “CS,” this one was flushed out of Northern California distributor warehouse quickly. . . making it just a grand memory.
But wait kids. . .you just gotta believe in something bigger than all of us. There is always hope. . .especially when Santa Gary touches his pinky finger to his bright pink cheek. We turned up 19 more cases in the warehouse in SoCal that are now sitting in our stockroom, and Santa Gary wouldn’t dream of tinkering with the price. Same deal: $14.99 per bottle on six.
Winery Tasting Notes: “This unfiltered, unfined, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is opaque, deep and rich with black plum, pencil lead, cassis, tar–on and on–layer upon layer. Very serious, very delicious, this great Cabernet will write a new chapter for Washington wine.
Wine Advocate Review (90 to 93 pts.): “Another stunner from the team at Charles Smith, the 2013 Substance is a cabernet sauvignon dominated blend that comes from the higher elevation vineyards of Goose Ridge and Frenchman Hills. Harvested in early November and aged in 40-50% new French oak, it sports gorgeous aromas and flavors of cassis, violets, pencil shavings and tobacco/herbs to go with a medium to full-bodied, layered, rich and beautifully balanced profile on the palate. Scheduled to be bottled in December, it tastes like a wine that taste three to four times what this is going for. It is a knockout value. It should be purchased by the case and consumed over the coming seven to eight years, if not longer.”
Drew’s Impression: “I am a huge fan of Washington wines. . .darker berry fruits, more herbaceous overtones, cocoa, l’il tobacco, all the good stuff that I love in a cab. This wine has all of it and tastes like it should be in Smith’s “K Vintner’s” premium line-up. I am an advocate of big wines with weight, depth and a long finish and, again, you will not be disappointed with SUBSTANCE…because it does have it. . .substance.”
