HKG Sparkling Rose of Pinot Noir 2011 (Russian River Valley, CA)
Winery Tasting Notes:
"With sparkling wine, the goal is to preserve a dazzling acidity while insulating the grapes from intense heat or over ripeness. Early in the season we earmark certain site specific areas of our estate vineyards and farm them for sparkling production. Fewer leaves are pulled to provide a touch of extra shade, especially on the side of the vines exposed to the afternoon sun. Grapes are harvested at approximately 19 Brix and gently pressed to produce an elegant, pale pink juice with soft flavors.
There is a delicate fruitiness and fine effervescence to this wine. Strawberry notes outline the bouquet while crisp raspberry and citrus flavors highlight the flavor profile. The cuvee of pure Pinot Noir contribute to a refreshing austerity on the finish." $25.95 -
J Brut "Cuvee 20" Non-Vintage (Russian River Valley)
Winery Tasting Notes:
50% Chardonnay, 49% Pinot Noir, 1% Pinot Meunier
"Our J Cuvée 20 Brut gracefully opens up with the crisp, clean allure of crushed hazelnut and ripe apricot aromas. Upon entry, you notice a delicate tickle of fresh mousse on the nose and palate. The acidity adds to the liveliness and the lemon citrus zest leads to lingering flavors of Fuji apples and Bartlett pears. This is the perfect wine to share and pair during holiday gatherings. I suggest serving it with an apricot-glazed country ham, or when seasons change, a spring salad of mixed greens, topped with toasted nuts and drizzled with a light vinaigrette dressing. It?s also great with Kumamoto oysters or a creamy Brie cheese."
Winemaker: Melissa Stackhouse ($19.99 on 6+ Bottles) $28.00 -
J Vineyards Brut Rose Non-Vintage (Russian River Valley, CA)
Winemaker Tasting Notes:
"The first thing you have to notice is the sexy bottle and the seductive wine color that grabs you. After that, when you're tasting the wine, you think crisp, red berries, blood orange, lemon peel, concentrated flavors, perfect balance, effervescent, elegant, and can I have another glass. For me, this wine is great with fruit or Hog Island oysters. Or a perfect way to start an evening out with friends."
Winemaker: Melissa Stackhouse ($24.99 on 6+ Bottles) $29.99 -
Laetitia Brut Cuvee Non-Vintage (California)
Winery Tasting Notes:
"A blending of our three base wines, this Brut Cuvee begins in January following our harvest. Laetitia Chardonnay provides elegant citrus and green apple flavors. Our Pinot Noir exhibits subtle earthy black cherry, red fruit nuances and a kiss of our Pinot Blanc adds soft melon traces which round out the palate. The result is a wine that is perfectly fresh and lively which carries on the tradition of elegance that Laetitia wines are famous for. Enjoy this wine with cheeses, seafood, chicken or white pasta dishes. Enjoy it between courses to freshen the palate and especially enjoy it with friends, anytime."
Winemaker: Eric Hickey ($17.99 on 6+ Bottles) $22.00 -
Le Vigne Di Alice Prosecco 2010 (Italy)
Winery Tasting Notes:
"This is an all-woman operation here, from name itself 'The Vineyards of Alice,' which honors Cinzia's grandmother, to the dedicated team of Cinzia Canzia, and enologist Pier Francesca Bonicelli. These women have set out to make an elegant and distinct Proseccos. The style of Proseccos at Alice leans more toward the elegant and dry side (so you get a mix of apple acidity with that pear).
The Alice Prosecco Extra-Dry di Conegliano and Valdobiaddine comes from the two most famous zones of Prosecco; it shows apples, pear, and the classic Acacia flower. It's fun and elegance provides a great way to start off impromptu get-togethers, or, to toast with at weddings.
In Prosecco lingo, Brut is drier, confusingly enough, than extra-dry. The Alice Prosecco Brut 'Doro' di Valdobiaddine remains a very dry Prosecco, and offers the more serious and complex side of Prosecco; very precise aromatics of honey, honeysuckle, and asian pear; small beaded bubbles create a creamy perlage."
Winemaker: Pier Francesca Bonicelli $24.00 -

Dehlinger Chardonnay Estate Unfiltered 2010 (Russian River Valley)
"Wine Advocate" Tasting Notes:
"The 2010 Chardonnay Estate is captivating in its beauty. All the elements are very nicely balanced in this soft, textured Chardonnay. Tropical fruit, lemon and pastry are some of the many notes that take shape in the glass. The 2010 is rich and expressive, but not at all heavy. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2016."

Etre Chardonnay 2010 (Sonoma Coast)
Winery Tasting Notes:
"Our 2010 Etre Chardonnay opens with really inviting tropical aromas of mango, papaya and pineapple. On the palate, though, it's like an inside-out caramel apple, with crisp granny smith, kiwi and exotic spice flavors giving way to a delicate hazelnut cream richness that lingers on the long finish."
Winemaker: Jeff Gaffner $30.00 -
Failla "Hudson Vineyard" Chardonnay 2011 (Napa Valley)
Winery Tasting Notes:
"Arriving in early September from the rolling hills north of San Francisco Bay, this fruit was whole-cluster pressed into mixed-age French oak with about 25% going into a concrete egg. The concrete is an excellent foil to the barrel ferments, rounding texture and emphasizing aromatic purity. Bursting from the bottle, a mélange of asian pear, honeysuckle, lemon curd and wet stone announces the 2011 vintage. The palate opens with a fresh, crystalline quality redolent of spring greens, before the arrival of a creamy mid-palette. Nervy, structured acidity makes for length and dimension on the finish."
Winemaker: Ehren Jordan $52.50 -
Foley "Santa Barbara County" Chardonnay 2010 (SBC)
Winery Tasting Notes:
"Initial scents of butter and toast give way to pineapple, white peaches, pears, nutmeg, vanilla and slate. It has enough body to stand up to a wide array of foods and the balance to drink well on its own."
Winemaker: Leslie Mead-Renaud $24.99 -
Kistler Vineyards "Les Noisetiers" Chardonnay 2011 (Sonoma County)

$59.95 -
Kongsgaard Chardonnay 2010 (Napa Valley, CA)
"Wine Advocate" Tasting Notes:
"Kongsgaard?s 2010 Chardonnay wraps around the palate with juicy, yellow, fleshy fruit, smoke and spices. There is pungent, aromatic intensity in the bouquet of these old Wente Chardonnay clones that gives the wine its aromatic heft. Layers of fruit build to the textured, inviting finish. In another year, the oak should be even better integrated than it is today. These parcels are planted with a combination of a Hudson selection of Wente with no seeds and a Muscat version of Wente. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020."
"Wine Spectator" Tasting Notes:
"A tour de force that stretches the range of flavors. Rich and laden with roasted, smoky marshmallow, this shows tiers of marmalade, tangerine, roasted fig and fig tapenade, sailing along seamlessly through the finish. Drink now through 2019."
$82.50 -
Les Heritiers du Comte Lafon "Macon-Milly Lamartine" Chardonnay 2011 (France)
Winery Tasting Notes:
"This is the prized vineyard in the village of Milly located in a steep ampitheater directly behind Lafon's winery. Much of the fruit here goes into the village Milly bottling with just the old vines in the heart of the vineyard, having best exposure, going into this cuvée. Very mineral with great length, this wine's richness comes out only after at least a year in bottle. The fruit is classic Mâcon styled with tinges of citrus that give a hint of it's potential to age at least 5-7 years."
Winemaker: Dominique Lafon $25.95 -
Les Heritiers du Comte Lafon "Vire-Clesse" Chardonnay 2011 (France)
"Outstanding Top value" and 89-92 points Allen Meadows (Burghound):
"A deft touch of wood frames a distinctly ripe but very fresh mélange of white orchard fruit, honey, orange peel and citrus blossom. There is a lovely sense of tension to the supple and round medium weight flavors that possess good detail and plenty of punch on the dry, clean, linear and explosive finish. This is also potentially outstanding. Drink: 2013+. (Sep 2012)"
Winemaker: Dominique Lafon $39.95 -
Liquid Farm "FOUR" Chardonnay 2011 (Santa Rita Hills)
Winery Tasting Notes:
"75% Neutral. 25% New barrels w/ Native Yeast Fermentation. Bottled Unfined & Unfiltered 2011 brought the honor of working with FOUR additional Chardonnay vineyards: Bent Rock, Radian, Huber and Clos Pepe. In that same vintage as a tribute to our FOUR barrel start in 2009 we decided to create a small lot cuvee from FOUR barrels that most blew our minds. The number FOUR has came up often and organically throughout our project and oddly enough, it has been both of our favorite numbers since childhood; she sort of named herself...
PROFILE: exotic spices, almond paste, keffir lime, nutmeg, honeycomb, intoxicating.
Winemaker: Brandon Sparks-Gillis & John Dragonette $75.50 -
Luli Chardonnay 2011 (Santa Lucia Highlands)
Winery Tasting Notes:
"Luli Chardonnay captures the expression of the Santa Lucia Highlands: Very vibrant aromatics, pure fruit and mineral flavors with a long, elegant finish. Grapes for this wine are sourced from multiple vineyards in the Santa Lucia Highlands. Working with different vineyard sites gives added complexity to the wines. In the winery, fermentation and aging take place in a combination of stainless steel and neutral barrels to add various flavors to the wine. The stainless steel vessels keep the aromatics bright and expressive, while the neutral barrels provide a more rounded texture without overbearing oak flavor."
Winemaker: Jeff Pisoni ($18.99 on 6+ Bottles) $21.95 -
Pisoni Vineyards LUCIA "SLH" Chardonnay 2011 (Santa Lucia Highlands)
Winery Tasting Notes:

Full-bodied, the palate has a supple texture with highlights of white peach and fresh pineapple that lead into a crisp finish. Drink now through 2017."
Winemaker: Jeff Pisoni $39.95 -
Pisoni Vineyards LUCIA "Soberanes" Chardonnay 2011 (Santa Lucia Highlands)
Winery Tasting Notes:
"The green-gold hued Lucia Soberanes Chardonnay has a laser-like focus of mineral and citrus driven notes. The aromatics entice the taster to swirl and watch the beautiful perfume unfold. Undertones in the bouquet consist of almond skin, creme brulee and orange blossom. The palate is extra-long and layered, flowing together into a seamless and drawn-out finish with refreshing acid structure. Drink now or age for a decade."
Winemaker: Jeff Pisoni $49.95 -
Prime Chardonnay "District 4" 2009 (Napa Valley)
Winery Tasting Notes:
"This second vintage of PRIME Chardonnay comes from the 25 year old vines of the Berry Lane Vineyard in Napa?s Coombsville district. The wine was made in a fairly unusual style: 33% New oak, 33% neutral oak and 33% stainless steel fermentation. To preserve the natural acidity, the wine did not go through malolactic fermentation. The result is a Chardonnay that has an unusually crisp acid profile yet has the flavors associated with barrel fermentation."

Winemaker: Ted Henry ($19.99 on 6+ Bottles) $23.95 -

Shafer "Red Shoulder Ranch" Chardonnay 2011 (Carneros)
"Wine Advocate" Tasting Notes:
"The 2011 Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch has a similar aromatic and flavor profile as the 2010 with more textural richness and oiliness because of the presence of botrytis in this vintage. I have to say, the 2011 is highly intriguing. It will be interesting to see where the wine goes over the coming years. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2017."

Stonestreet "Broken Road" Chardonnay 2010 (Sonoma County)
"Wine Advocate" Tasting Notes:
"The 2010 Chardonnay Broken Road is a textured wine graced with notable depth and richness. Winemaker: Bill Brosseau $25.00 -
Three Sticks "Durell Vineyard" Chardonnay 2010 (Sonoma)
Winery Tasting Notes:
"Fruit for Three Sticks Durell Vineyard Chardonnay comes from two tried and true blocks.
Block 3: The primary source for Three Sticks chardonnay is planted to the "Old Wente" selection. This vineyard is the most northern and one of the oldest at Durell. The gently sloped block has a southern exposure and the soil is some of the lightest on that end of the ranch. It is light in textured and whitish in color. We specifically select only the grapes in this block from this particular soil. This is also one of the coldest, windiest parts of Durell. The fog hangs there forever and the wind gets funneled and re-channeled down a little sub-valley making for stronger more prevalent wind. Block 3?s light soil gives fruit that provides our wine its classic flavor, richness and deep texture.
"Rocky Flat": From the rocky flatland on the northeastern side of the estate comes this Dijon clone 76 planting. The soil is well drained but most importantly the little bit of soil stuck between all those rocks is surprisingly fertile and strong. This according to Rob Harris, Director of Vineyard Operations "is the genius of Durell." The combination of this kind of rock and this kind of soil in the ratios we have is the biggest asset and determining influence. The rocks bask in the warm sunshine all day long, warming the soil and radiating warmth to the fruit. The result is the lush, ripe flavor and distinctive minerality that deliciously complement the "Wente" lot bringing two of the loveliest attributes of Durell together in your glass."
Winemaker: Don Van Staaveren $60.00 -
Trefethen Vineyards Chardonnay 2010 (Carneros)

Tuck Beckstoffer "Semper" Chardonnay 2008 (Sonoma Coast)
Winery Tasting Notes:
"The inaugural vintage of chardonnay under the Semper label showcases the finesse, purity and character of Chardonnay grown on the Sonoma Coast of California. This wine offers up remarkable notes of fresh picked fuji apples, toasted vanilla, orange blossoms, wet rock and citrus oil. The wine displays multiple layers of flavor and concentration combined with focused acid that beautifully compliments and integrates with the 100% new oak its aged in. The purity of aroma, flavor and finish in this wine are a nod to the appellation, vineyard sourcing and winemaking."
$64.95 -
Walter Hansel "The Meadows" Chardonnay 2010 (Russian River Valley)
Winery Tasting Notes:
"This is a new wine from Walter Hansel Vineyards. Previously this section of the Estate Vineyard was planted to Pinot Noir. Steve didn't like the development of the Pinot from this flat area of the vineyard near Guerneville Road. He budded over to a "Hanzell" clone (Musque) of Chardonnay. This is the first vintage of this wine produced.
The Hanzell clone is known for its exotic fruits and texture. This wine is no different.
It is loaded with rich tropical fruits, pineapple, apricots, mango and backed by nice wood and a creamy mouth feel. The finish is balanced and fresh with nice acidity and lingers with creamy apricots, apples, and white flowers."

Chateau de Saint Cosme Cotes du Rhone Blanc 2011 (France)
Winery Tasting Notes:
30% Roussanne, 20% Viognier, 20% Marsanne, 30% Picpoul de Pinet
"Rankly, the vinification of the Cotes du Rhone white 2011 has been a race. A race against the heat at the end of august. A race against over-ripening, a difficult race to get the holy grail: the freshness. In this difficult quest, the Picpoul saved us. We will never say enough how wonderful is this magnificent forgotten grape, so well adapted to the southern climate. It is aromatic, it is fresh, it is sharp without being agressive, it has purity and limpidity. The most important: it does lift the other grapes, keeping the secrecy of the civilised being. Our grand-fathers have planted many «acidic grapes» such as picpoul, bourboulenc, colombard, ugni blanc...etc...I think the best is the picpoul! I am happy with the Cotes du Rhone blanc 2011. Think about it when you'll taste it: try to find this taste of picpoul which is a far cousin of the famous sauvignon.

Mark Herold Flux Blanc 2011 (California)
Winery Tasting Notes:
"Flux Blanc is a Grenache Blanc dominated white blend made of Grenache Blanc (70%) and Rousanne (30%). Grapes were gently whole-cluster pressed and fermented in concrete eggs for 4 months. These eggs have the unique ability of allowing micro amounts of oxygen into the wine much like barrels but without imparting wood flavors. Furthermore, the egg?s round-bottom shape is constantly keeping yeast lees in suspension, which helps develop mouth-feel. The outcome is a huge complex aromatic array of flinty white peaches, honeysuckle, rose petals, apricot and spring flowers. The mouth in incredibly rich with honeyed exotic citrus and refreshing acid balance. This wine is both a sipping wine and a great food wine."

Herb Lamb Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 (Napa Valley)

"Winemaker Mike Trujillo calls this --a more structured vintage than some, not as plump and fruit driven, but producing a more linear and focused wine. This wine has a lovely bouquet with a balance that is perfect for the weight of the wine. The nose is seamless, expressive and pretty, showing red fruits and a rich blueberry reduction. In the mouth you sense a richness of fig, ripe
plum, deep black cherry and blackberry.
You can feel the finesse and elegance on the palate that highlights the sweet red fruit flavors - cherry, currant, raspberry and red licorice. There are spicy, toasted oak flavors with silky, elegant tannins which are muted in the background, as an extra element giving balance to the wine.
Although this vintage may appear tighter in it youth, the 2009 HL Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon has mature fruits and tannins showing complexity and layers that will develop as it ages. There is a lingering finish highlighting flavors which will fold in nicely with a few more months of ageing - definitely worth the wait to mature. "Mocha, tar, spices and tobacco all flow from the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five. A rich, intense wine, the 2010 impresses for its depth and sheer power. Sixteen by Twenty Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 (Napa Valley)
Winery Tasting Notes:
"If you follow my newsletters and social posts you?ll recall that over the past three years I?ve been quite enthusiastic about the 2010 wines. Purity. That?s the word that described these wines every time we barrel tasted and that?s the word that describes them in the bottle. The 16x20 2010 has a saturated, deep, blackish purple color - it is our darkest 16x20 Cabernet to date and that?s saying something. It is oh so young right now but there is so much stuffing in this wine that it?s bursting to show ? more opulent and intense at this early stage than previous vintages. The nose is clean and round with a pure fullness of macerated soaked fruit. Ripe Blackberry is compellingly dominant but Blackcurrant is only slightly in the background. There is a whisper of Raspberry jam that is enveloped by lively red, sour cherries around the edges. Nuances of dried mint, anise, charred cedar, and a welcome aroma of violets keeps things complex. Mocha chocolate can be found lurking. The flavors must again be simply described as pure. Pure, intense Blackberry melds into Blackcurrant with Black cherry showing up on the finish. Graphite, smoky cedar, spice notes and enveloping silty tannins begin to make up the complex layers of flavor but it?s the purity of the fruit that defines this wine. There is a volume and expansiveness of the pure flavors that is hard to describe but its impression lingers as the sappy black fruits coat your mouth in the long and lingering finish. Is there new French Oak here? - yes; 78% - but it?s so perfectly integrated that you won?t focus on it; you?ll just enjoy the ideal harmonious balance. Pure, intense balance. 1/2013"
Winemaker: Paul Hobbs ($42.50 on 6+ Bottles) $49.95 -
Stonestreet "Bear Point" Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 (Sonoma County)
"Wine Advocate" Notes:
"A similar situation exists with the Cabernet Sauvignons. They are all 100% Cabernet Sauvignons made in 200-case lots, with the exception of the Monument Ridge, and all are aged 18 months in French oak of which 70% is new. There are just too many similarities between them even though they come from various elevations (ranging from 500 feet to as high as 2,400 feet). All the Cabernets are dense, tannic and full-bodied with impressive levels of richness, minerality and blue and black fruits. My favorites include the Christopher?s, Bear Point, Rockfall, and Cougar Ridge. Interestingly, the Monument Ridge and Monolith tasted more tannic, closed and difficult to evaluate. These are big, concentrated Cabernet Sauvignons and even though some of the vineyards are separated by as much as five miles, there is an overall similarity that comes from this Alexander Mountain Estate despite the various elevations and expositions. Perhaps 15-25 years of aging will confirm Jess Jackson?s belief that they are different. That being said, they are all high quality, promising Cabernets that should still be drinking well in 25-30 years."
Winemaker: Graham Weerts $54.00 -
Stonestreet "Monolith" Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 (Sonoma County)
"Wine Advocate" Notes:
"The same can be said for the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Monolith. Slightly more opulent with a sumptuous perfume of espresso roast, chocolate, and creme de cassis as well as superb fruit density, richness, and length, this killer Cabernet can be drunk now or cellared for 20-25 years."
Winemaker: Graham Weerts $69.95 -

Smooth, dark and velvety on the pallet, the 2009 is both supple and round, with deft balance flowing evenly from front to back. Bottled in the early summer of 2011, this vintage can be enjoyed in 2012 but it will benefit from a few years in the cellar."

Cherry Picker Merlot 2009 (California)
Winery Tasting Notes:
"This California Merlot was created to be just what the name implies, a cherry bomb of ripe red fruit, soft tannins, supple, luscious and a wine that you don't have to analyze or work on describing. It just tastes good.
The 2009 Cherry Picker was crafted from classic wine regions like Sonoma, Napa, Mendocino and the Central Coast, in order to take advantage of the different attributes and characters of those regions. The idea was to create a great tasting wine that I could take out for parties, a red wine that could be opened and enjoyed with pizza, hamburgers, a steak, or simply to knock out a few bottles with friends playing cards without having to analyze or think about what we were drinking.
The wine has the balance I'm always looking for with a moderate use of oak, alcohol under 14%, loaded with juicy, ripe red cherry fruit, a round velvety mouthfeel and finishes with lush texture."

Hall Merlot 2008 (Napa Valley)
Winery Tasting Notes:
"The nose on this 2008 Napa Valley Merlot is intricately laced with minty plum, black currant, herbal minerality, and spiced cocoa. The mid-palate is expressly lifted with vibrant tannins that gracefully melt away under sweet baked plum, cocoa and dried rose petal flavors. With an enticing fruit presence, this wine is enjoyable now, but will mature and gain complexity over the next 3-5 years. Made with 100% Merlot."

Hourglass "Blueline Vineyard" Merlot 2010 (Napa Valley)
Winery Tasting Notes:
"This year the old vine Merlot block turned 21 (old enough to drinks its own Kool-Aid). In the "new world," vine age is something that often gets overlooked, but in the mineral rich soils of Blueline Vineyard, the age and depth of the root system is integral to the uniqueness of our Merlot as it reaches deep into the soils for its essence. Most people think of clay-based soils for growing Merlot. Not so at Blueline. Here the soils are broken-down volcanic ash, mixed with cobble and river washed sand: high in mineral concentration, low in organic carbon (clay). The result is a truly special terroir, rendering small Merlot berries with dense, complex flavors, an incredible structure, andan electric minerality. Explosive aromatics of dark sour cherry, black berry puree, plum and hints of cedar and tea leaf are followed on the palate with flavors of plum, hoisin, dark chocolate and tangy red fruits. Unlike past vintages, we blended a larger concentration of Cabernet Sauvignon in the 2010 vintage for a tighter structure and added layers. A whiff of sage and fennel from the Block 11 Cabernet Sauvignon can be found as the wine opens. This Merlot exhibits stunning opulence and density, but it is the bright acidity and vibrant minerality that make it multi-dimensional and truly special.
There are many wineries making Merlot to masquerade as Cabernet Sauvignon, and marketing it as such. Our belief is that the core DNA of Merlot from special sites delivers something truly unique that can stand shoulder to shoulder with the more celebrated varietals of the world. We are not out to make a "Cab lovers Merlot," we are out to set the record straight on Merlot itself!"

Lava Cap Merlot 2008 (El Dorado, CA)
Winery Tasting Notes:
"The grapes for our 2008 Merlot Reserve were grown exclusively in our vineyard and hand-harvested. The Merlot berries were cold soaked for 72 hours. The resulting juice was inoculated with specially selected cultured yeast strains. The wine was then aged for 14 months in small French oak barrels. Lush plum and cherry fruit abound, darkened by the spice of oak and the mineral edge of its tannin."

"The 2010 August West Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir is comprised of 82% Rosella's Vineyard and 18% Garys' Vineyard. This is only our 3rd ever SLH blend, which we introduced with the 2008 vintage. 2010 was the 6th harvest in a row of below normal summer temperatures, and the mid October picking dates were the latest we've seen in many years. The last time California Pinot vineyards saw a year like this was in 1998."

Belle Glos "Clark & Telephone" Pinot Noir 2011 (Santa Maria Valley)

"Established in 1972, the Clark & Telephone Vineyard was planted "own root" to the Martini clone. Cargasacchi "Cargasacchi Vineyard" Pinot Noir 2009 (Santa Rita Hills)
Winery Tasting Notes:
"The 2009 Cargasacchi was fermented in a chilled, jacketed stainless steel fermenter at 65° F. The wine is savory and complex with aromas of raspberry, smoked cranberry and sage. A coating mouthfeel envelopes and fills the mouth as the flavor of the first sip reaches the taste buds. The sensation of supple texture is followed by flavors of concentrated red cherries, wild berries and red plums that are zesty, showing intensity but not weightiness. Ripe and silky, with persistent flavors."
"Wine Advocate" Tasting Notes:
"The 2009 Pinot Noir Cargasacchi Vineyard is rich, round and seductive. Juicy red cherries, flowers, mint, licorice and spices caress the palate in this expressive, generous Pinot. Drought conditions resulted in low yields, tiny berries and considerable concentration. The 2009 was aged on its lees in barrel and was not racked until it was bottled. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016."
Winemaker: Peter Cargasacchi $39.99 -
Domaine M Frederic Esmonin Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru (France)
Winery Profile:
"Esmonin is becoming one of the most consistent, high quality producers in Gevrey. They are now using a new bladder-press and have excellent control over the amount of pressure exerted on the grapes, which are picked only when they have reached ideal ripeness. After a short cold maceration gives the wines an extra dimension of fruit, they are aged in carefully selected French oak barrels of Allier and Nevers forest wood made by Radoux and Berthomieu, two of the very best coopers. Wines are aged in barrels of varying age and toast and then blended in order to achieve optimum balance and complexity."
Stephen Tanzer IWC:
93 POINTS!!!"Good bright red. Expressive aromas of cherry, pomegranate, rose petal and flowers. Sweet, lush and pliant, with red fruit and floral flavors complicated by a menthol nuance. The rising, long finish features sweet tannins and a note of faded flowers. Lovely, classy wine."

Hamilton Russell Pinot Noir 2010 (South Africa)
"Wine Advocate" Tasting Notes:
"The sublime 2010 Pinot Noir is aged for 10 months in oak, of which 44% was new and the remainder used. It has a ripe bouquet of redcurrant, strawberry and Morello that shows no signs of under-ripeness that Hamilton?s Pinots occasionally exhibit due to leaf-roll. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe fleshy redcurrant and cranberry fruit that is underpinned by extremely fine tannins. This has wonderful build in the mouth and the finish is exuberant, almost feisty! This is an audacious Pinot Noir from one of South Africa?s top estates. Drink now-2020."
"Wine Spectator" Tasting Notes:

Siduri "Hirsch Vineyards" Pinot Noir 2010 (Sonoma Coast)
Winery Tasting Notes:
"Once again, sadly, the 2010 vintage has produced a miniscule amount of Hirsch Vineyard Pinot Noir. Yields were just over 1 ton per acre from our 2.75 acre section, and out of this tiny quantity of wine we selected only 4 barrels for the final blend (two of the Pommard clone and two of the Mt Eden clone). Making such a draconian selection in a small-crop year isn't easy, but our goal of producing a wine truly expressive of the site and vintage means that sometimes you have to make such choices. Fermented in small bins, punched down by hand, and bottled without fining or filtration, this is wine is a true expression of a grape and place."
"Since we started working back with the Hirsch Vineyard in 1995, we have learned that this wine is more about balance than power, and more about transparency of site expression than richness of character. The 2010 vintage certainly exhibits those characteristics that we desire. With vibrant acidity, a preponderance of red fruits and a pine needle, forest floor complexity that we find uniquely in the wines from the far Sonoma Coast, this Hirsch represents a distinctly more elegant expression of the site than some of our efforts. This is a wine to be savored over an evening, with great food and superb company..."

Siduri "Pisoni Vineyard" Pinot Noir 2011 (Santa Lucia Highlands)
"Wine Advocate" Tasting Notes:
"Although a bit understated, the 2011 Pinot Noir Pisoni is nicely layered in this vintage. The 2011 is a relatively laid back wine from the Pisoni vineyard, yet there is wonderful finesse and a nuanced, textured quality to the fruit that is highly appealing. Sweet cherries, flowers, herbs, spices and crushed rocks flow through to the pointed finish. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2016."
Winemaker: Adam & Diana Lee $62.95 -
Skywalker Pinot Noir 2010 (Marin County)
Winery Tasting Notes:
"Dense ruby with purple shadows, this wine?s color hints that good things will follow. Powerful aromas of spicy clove and dark forest berries lead to a luxuriously textured and coating wine with incredible density and sweetness. The finish is beyond generous with layers of ripe fruit and spice, very lasting and uncommon for its power and hedonistic charm."

Stoller "JV" Pinot Noir 2010 (Dundee Hills, OR)
Winery Tasting Notes:
"The 2010 JV Pinot Noir was de-stemmed into steel fermentation tanks, where it spent 7 to 10 days cold soaking before fermentation began. Approximately half of the Pinot Noir was fermented with native yeasts; the remainder was inoculated with various commercial yeast strains. After fermentation, the wine was put to barrel where it underwent secondary fermentation and aged 10 months prior to bottling."

Tondre Pinot Noir 2010 (Santa Lucia Highlands)
Winery Tasting Notes:
"After a very long cool growing season, the 2010 Vintage was finally harvested...it was truly worth waiting for. The Santa Lucia Highlands AVA was also lucky enough to be harvested before most of the rains that hit the northern coastal vineyards. The long hang time in the vineyard gave us fruit of exceptional quality. Perhaps this vintage will go down as a classic vintage to remember. The aromatics of this wine are stunning; glorious red and black cherries in abundance . Subtle hints of vanilla and cinnamon linger on the finish where they intermingle with the obvious pinot cherry fruit. This wine is well structured, balanced and certainly worthy of further bottle ageing as any great vintage should be."
Winemaker: Anthony Craig $39.95 -
Walter Hansel "Cuvee Alysce" Pinot Noir 2010 (Russian River Valley)
"Wine Advocate" Tasting Notes:
"The 2010 Pinot Noir Cuvee Alyce is surprisingly plush and deep in this vintage. This is a more overt, fruit-driven style than I would have expected considering the year. Black cherries, currants, licorice and tobacco saturate the palate in this fleshy, deep Pinot. The 2010 Cuvee Alyce is all about rich, textured fruit. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022."
Winemaker: Walter Hansel $39.00 -
Walter Hansel "South Slope" Pinot Noir 2010 (Russian River Valley)
"Wine Advocate" Tasting Notes:
"The 2010 Pinot Noir South Slope is considerably firmer than the 2009. Firm, yet well-balanced tannins support cinnamon, cloves, dark cherries and licorice. The 2010 shows excellent energy and verve, but it naturally needs time in bottle to come together. I especially like the energy and focus here. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020."

Ancient Peaks "Renegade" Red Wine 2010 (Paso Robles)
Winery Tasting Notes:
Syrah 51%, Malbec 25%, Petit Verdot 24%
"The winemaking vision of Renegade is to craft a rich, boldly flavored wine with structure and finesse. The final blend was assembled after extensive trials. The Syrah offers a core of dark, luscious fruit with notes of spice. The Malbec contributes a juicy, mouthwatering texture, while the Petit Verdot adds structure, intensity and fullness. Each varietal lot was cold soaked for 24 to 48 hours prior to fermentation for a gentle extraction of initial color and flavor. A portion of the Syrah from Block 43 was fermented in small bins with native yeasts for enhanced complexity. After fermentation, the individual lots were aged for 16 months in a combination of French (65%) and American oak (35%) barrels, 33 percent of which featured new oak. A majority of the Syrah was aged in barrels with medium-plus toasting to accentuate the varietal?s meaty, smoky nuances."

Behrens & Hitchcock "Heavyweight" Red Wine 2008 (Napa Valley)
"Wine Advocate" Tasting Notes:
"The 2008 The Heavyweight is an intense, brooding red. Today it comes across as introspective and shut down. Black fruit, tar, smoke and grilled herbs struggle to emerge from a wall of tannins that is impenetrable. If the wine finds its center it may merit a higher score, but it does not look likely at this point. The Heavyweight is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and 10% Merlot. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018.
I was very impressed with the wines I tasted from Behrens Family Winery. These bold, racy wines are long on exuberance and sheer personality."
"Wine Spectator" Tasting Notes:
"This supersized red is dark, rich, dense and chewy, with dark fruit, cedar, licorice and tobacco flavors giving the wine power. Ends with big, chewy tannins. Appropriately named. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Drink now through 2024."
Winery Tasting Notes:
80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot
"The Heavyweight is back and packing a punch! Starting with a nose of sweet, toasty oak, almonds and cherry cola, this wine is a cornucopia of scents and flavors. Focused with a solid backbone of acidity, flavors of ripe blueberries, black licorice and clove and a long, spicy, cocoa powder finish, as delicious as this wine is now, it?s built to go the distance."

"Are we repeating ourselves? This wine floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee! With a name like The Heavyweight, one might expect a sucker punch, yet there is indisputable elegance to this champion. It is fragrant with lovely blue fruits, violets, crushed flowers and blackberries. The palate is highly refined with elements of Bing cherries, roses, figs and currants. The finish lingers with velvety tannins. This wine is built for the long haul."
"Wine Advocate" Tasting Notes:
"The appropriately named 2009 Red Blend The Heavyweight captures the best of the Behrens house style. A big powerful wine, that nevertheless possesses dazzling structure, vibrancy and harmony, the 2008 impresses for its balance and total harmony. Blackberries, olives, spices, herbs, licorice, French oak and melted road tar all jump from the glass as this powerful, intense wine shows off its considerable personality. Flavors of black cherry and sassafras are forward in this plush, seductive and balanced wine. Big Basin Vineyards GSM "Paderewski Vineyard" Red Wine 2010 (Paso Robles)
"Wine Advocate" Tasting Notes:
"The 2010 Paderewski Vineyard is strikingly beautiful. A blend of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre, the 2010 impresses for the way it expresses the richness of Paso Robles fruit, but in a more refined, vibrant style than is typical of Paso. The new oak is beautifully balanced here. It is absolutely fascinating and eye opening that this wine tastes nothing like the wines being made in Paso from the very same site. This is a wine of pure finesse and elegance above all else. All of the fruit was picked between October 21 and 29. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2020."

Supporting notes of sweet oak, anise and cassis add brightness and nuance to the nose. On the palate, this full-bodied wine is packed with radiant tannins, mouthfilling sweet fruit, chocolate and baking spices. Though eminently drinable now for its flashy youthfulness, 2010 has also produced a cellar-worthy CERVANTES that will gain complexity with additional aging."

Chateau La Nerthe / Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee des Cadettes (Chateauneuf-du-Pape, FR)
"Wine Advocate" Tasting Notes:
"The Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee des Cadettes was one of the first luxury cuvees of old vines made in Chateauneuf du Pape, the first vintage originating in 1972. There are usually anywhere from 500 to 1000 cases of it. A real stunner, and just being released on the market, is the 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee des Cadettes. A magnificent wine with deep ruby/purple color, a wonderfully sweet focus, aromatics of blue and black fruits intermixed with graphite, a hint of charcoal, and some earth and subtle Provencal herbs, the wine is full-bodied and has great depth, richness, power, and stature. There is plenty of tannin to shed, as one might expect from a top 2005, but it is well-integrated, and there is more than enough concentration and fruit to balance out the wine?s structural profile. Give this wine 5 years of bottle age and drink it over the following three decades. This is a monumental example of Chateauneuf du Pape."
"Wine Spectator" Tasting Notes:
"This delivers attention-grabbing mocha and cocoa aromas and offers a lush palate of juicy plum sauce, raspberry and boysenberry fruit, with licorice snap and graphite. The long, driven finish is really fine-grained, and this gains steam as it moves along. Drink now through 2025. 1,500 cases made."

Chateau Lassegue Saint Emillion 2006 (France)
"Wine Advocate" Tasting Notes:
"The 2006 reveals slightly too much new oak, but it is a medium to full-bodied effort with powerful tannin, impressive concentration, and a backward style. Pierre Seillan, the Bordelais winemaker responsible for such brilliant wines as Verite, is also overseeing the production of Lassegue. The winemaking team is clearly aiming for a St.-Emilion that will last 2-3 decades. The 2006 should be at its finest between 2014-2025."

Epoch "Authenticity" Red Wine 2010 (Paso Robles, CA)
Winery Tasting Notes:
76% Syrah, 24% Mourvedre
"This wine is living up to its muse - Bill Armstrong. Earning its name as "The Bill Wine" from the moment of blending, the 2010 Authenticity is complex and outspoken with many elaborate gears. Its integrated stemy-ness brings its fruit and minerality to a whole new level of wine enjoyment."
"Wine Advocate" Tasting Notes:
"Sweet, floral notes meld into dark fruit, road tar and crushed rocks as the 2010 Authenticity opens up in the glass. The 2010 is a gorgeous, elegant wine endowed with considerable polish. In 2010, winemaker Jordan Fiorentini used 38% whole clusters, high for Epoch, and also fermented a portion of the fruit in concrete, both of which seem to work beautifully here. Authenticity is one of the most refined of these 2010s. The blend is 76% Syrah, 24% Mourvedre. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2017." $64.95 -
If You See Kay Red Wine 2010 (Lazio, Italy)
Winery Tasting Notes:
"The bottom line is we don't care what anybody thinks. We search out the best vineyards and we make uncompromised wine. Largely Cabernet-based, a touch of Petite Verdot and Primitivo - but we know you don't really care what varietal is on the label. You just want to open the bottle and think "this wine kicks ass!" Period, end of story...NO PRISONERS, THANK YOU.
kay is soft, creamy, juicy, rich, and powerful all at the same time. A dark and brooding wine, hints of imminent danger, ripe with confidence and purpose.

Quilceda Creek Red Wine 2009 (Columbia Valley, WA)
"Wine Advocate" Tasting Notes:
"Quilceda Creek?s 2009 Red Wine - which includes 15% of Merlot and near-negligible amounts of Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc - nicely integrates preserved walnut, toasted pecan, and green herbal elements into a matrix of cocoa powder, chocolate syrup, and confitured dark berries. There is a hint of heat to the finish of this plush, plump offering, but neither that nor the wines torrefied elements detract from a torrent of sweet berry juiciness, nor preclude a sense of energy and a dynamic interaction of myriad elements. I suspect, based on intuition as well as reliable reports -although I have scarcely any personal experience as yet with older Quilceda Creek wines - that this will remain well worth following for at least a decade."
Winemaker: Alex Golitzin $72.00 -
Scholium Gardens of Babylon NV (California)
Winery Tasting Notes:
"We have taken this wine in a new direction this year; toward a much more traditional California field blend. We had the good fortune to rescue some old vine Zinfandel this year, late in the season, after a few rains had scared away its original buyer. This allowed us to reframe the wine and make it more subtle and less boisterous than the 2008. The best wines for this compound came from two different vintages (PS from 2009, Zin from 2010) and so the wine is non-vintage, a blend in every way.
Here are the components:
63% BABYLON PETITE SIRAH, mostly from 2009, but some from 2010
18% 2010 MEAD RANCH ZINFANDEL
12% 2009 ANDROKTEINOS SYRAH
6% 2010 PHILLIPS FARMS CINSAULT
The wine is not the tannic monster that is has been in the past. It is much more subtle, elegant, and fresh. In some ways, it is most marked by the Cinsault-- the smallest component in the blend. You might even say that the wine is "lovely" and mean something wholly good.
Lively and unforeseen: a traditional California blend based on petite sirah (as always), but comprising Zinfandel, Syrah, and Cinsault. More subtle and less boisterous than the 2008."
Winemaker: Gavin Chanin ($29.99 on 6+ Bottles) $36.00 -
Stonestreet "Fifth Ridge" Red Wine 2007 (North Coast)
Winery Tasting Notes:
50.6% Merlot, 27.2% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.4% Malbec, 5.6% Petite Verdot, 2.1% Cabernet Franc
Fifth Ridge pays homage to the vintage snapshot of the mountain, personifying the best blend that nature provides in the year. In 2007, Fifth Ridge is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petite Verdot and Cabernet Franc.
The 2007 Fifth Ridge is a classic representation of the gorgeous tension between mountain Cabernet and Merlot in a cooler vintage. The nose is savory, marked by walnut meat, bay leaf, coee and black olive?yet all that darkness is bolstered on the palate by a core of bright cherry fruit and a lifted, lengthy nish shaded by graphite-flavored tannins.
Winemaker: Graham Weerts $39.95 -
Stonestreet "Legacy" Proprietary Red Wine 2006 (Alexander Valley, CA)

"Sharing the same winemaker, Graham Werts, as the Stonestreet winery, the 2006 Legacy is a 1,400-case blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot and Malbec. This gorgeous 2006 boasts a deep ruby/purple color as well as aromas and flavors of spicy oak, creosote, burning embers, and copious quantities of black currant and blackberry fruit. Full-bodied with a subtle smoky component, multilayers, a round, generous texture, and sweet tannin in its silky finish, it can be drunk now or cellared for 15-20+ years."

Emmolo Syrah 2006 (Napa Valley)
Winery Tasting Notes:
"Nestled along the Silverado Trail is a small vineyard that has become known to our family as our "South 40 Ranch." For years, my father sold these grapes to other wineries. Recently, our family decided to produce a limited bottling of Syrah to honor my father, Frank Emmolo. I am making this wine to pay tribute to my Dad?s lifelong dedication to the art of wine grape growing in Napa Valley. Our debut release is packed with intense black fruit, hints of earthiness, firm tannins and lots of heart. Thanks Dad."

Epoch "Block B" Syrah 2010 (Paso Robles, CA)
Winery Tasting Notes:
100% Syrah
"Block B has its usual graceful muscle with an incredible level of gorgeous Syrah fruit rounding out its chewy texture and an unmistakable earthiness."
"Wine Advocate" Tasting Notes:
"One of the most compelling wines in the Epoch lineup is the 2010 Block B, a 100% Syrah taken from a single block within the estate?s Paderewski vineyard. Today, the 2010 comes across as big, massive and super-concentrated, with the new oak tannins dominating much of the wine?s overall balance. This is a decidedly huge, explosive style of Syrah. My impression is that the new oak is too prominent. This is a classic example of typical Paso fruit that is so rich on its own it basically needs nothing else. I found the 2011, which I tasted from barrel, more interesting as well as nuanced. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2017." $69.95 -
La Sirena "Barrett Family" Syrah 2007 (Napa Valley)

Anticipated maturity: 2011-2017."

"Wine Advocate" Tasting Notes:
"A dazzling wine, the 2009 Syrah Melville bursts from the glass with black cherries, pepper, mint, violets and spices. Waves of fruit saturate the palate on a rich, creamy finish buffered by cooling veins of minerality. This is a wonderfully complete, harmonious wine from Samsara. Biale Vineyards "Black Chicken" Zinfandel 2011 (Napa Valley)
Winery Tasting Notes:
"The 2011 is one gorgeous "Chicken"and is right on the money: lush and dark fruits of blackberry, berry pie, black cherry, white pepper, peppermint, molasses, Oreo cookie, turmeric, vanilla, clove and nutmeg. A mouth-wetting snap of acidity balances the round and ripe fruit, and the thin-skinned Zinfandel tannins propel the wine into an elegant and impressive big Pinot Noir style. We expect that this Black Chicken has an optimal drinking range from 2013-2020.

"If you are one of those that believe bigger is better, read on. Appropriately named both for its bountiful bouqet of fruit, as well as where the grapes are grown, our most refined Zinfandel ever captivates the nose with pomegranate, fig, and cranberry.

(Sep 2012)"

SURRENDER YOUR INHIBITIONS -- Drink it while it's here, she won't stick around."

"Wine Advocate" Tasting Notes:
"The 2006 Barolo Terlo Ravera is a beautiful, focused wine. Berries, flowers and minerals come through nicely in this medium-bodied, feminine Barolo. This isn?t the biggest or most virile Barolo, but rather a wine that impresses for its finesse and sense of harmony. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. "
"Wine Spectator" Notes:
"Raspberry, cherry, iron and floral notes mark this silky red, which is fresh and complex at once, with a refined structure, great harmony and elegance. Winery Tasting Notes:
53% Touriga, 28% Souzao, 19% Tinta Cao
"Complex, sweet spice and herbal elements of mace, anise, candied ginger and wintergreen, soar aromatically above the deeper fruit scents which can best be described as fresh-baked blueberry pie. The flavors are a port lover?s tour-de-force, with a dynamic flavor profile of cassis liqueur, wild elderberry and rich, decadent dark chocolate. Drier and more structured than Ruby, our 2007 Violeta Portuguese-style port is capable of being cellared similar to a fine Vintage port."

Anakota Helena Dakota Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 (Sonoma County)
"Wine Advocate" Tasting Notes:
"Anakota, one of Jess Jackson?s flagship estates, is producing small quantities (about 500 cases of each wine) of outstanding Cabernets intended to showcase the potential of these vineyards on Mount St. Helena in Knight?s Valley. Both are 100% Cabernet Sauvignon planted at 700-900 foot elevations. The wines are aged 14 months in French oak. These impressive offerings establish Anakota as a worthy competitor to Peter Michael?s exceptional Les Pavots proprietary red."
Winemaker: Pierre Seillan $65.00 -
Behrens & Hitchcock "Heavyweight" Red Wine 2008 (Napa Valley)

Behrens & Hitchcock "The Heavyweight" Red Wine 2009 (Napa Valley)
Winery Tasting Notes:
The Heavyweight is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024."

Behrens Family Winery "The Knockout" Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 (Napa Valley)
Winery Tasting Notes:
"Returning to the ring is one of our favorite labels and wines, 2009 The Knockout. With a gorgeous garnet color and aromatics of black licorice, rich high-toned fruits and dried apricots, this wine opens with a pow. Blackberry, cardamom, plum and cedar dominate the palate with juicy tannins and a lingering finish of clove and baking spices. Throw in the towel, and surrender to this wine!"
"Wine Advocate" Tasting Notes:
"The Cabernet Sauvignon-based 2009 The Knockout is a very appropriately named wine. It won't win any contests for subtlety, but the wine delivers tons of fruit in a rich, hedonistic style. Layers of fruit flow through to an equally bombastic finish. Despite its richness, the wine has fabulous balance. Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc (8% each) round out the blend."
Winemaker: Les Behrens $85.50 -
Big Basin Vineyards GSM "Paderewski Vineyard" Red Wine 2010 (Paso Robles)

Bodegas Catena Zapata "Nicolas Catena" Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 (Argentina)
Winery Tasting Notes:
"The 2008 Nicolas Catena Zapata is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Malbec, and the balance Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc that spent 24 months in 100% new French oak followed by 24 months in bottle prior to release. It delivers an inviting bouquet of wood smoke, pencil lead, espresso, incense, lavender, black currant, and black cherry. This sets the stage for a full-bodied, powerful yet elegant, beautifully proportioned effort with great depth and volume. It conceals plenty of structure and will effortlessly evolve for 6-8 years, drinking well through 2028, if not longer."
Winemaker: Nicolas Zapata $124.95 -
Cargasacchi "Cargasacchi Vineyard" Pinot Noir 2009 (Santa Rita Hills)
Winemaker: Peter Cargasacchi $39.99 -
Chateau La Nerthe / Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee des Cadettes (Chateauneuf-du-Pape, FR)
Winemaker: Alain Dugas $174.99 -
Chateau Lassegue Saint Emillion 2006 (France)
"Wine Advocate" Tasting Notes:
"The 2006 reveals slightly too much new oak, but it is a medium to full-bodied effort with powerful tannin, impressive concentration, and a backward style. Pierre Seillan, the Bordelais winemaker responsible for such brilliant wines as Verite, is also overseeing the production of Lassegue. The winemaking team is clearly aiming for a St.-Emilion that will last 2-3 decades. The 2006 should be at its finest between 2014-2025."

"Wine Spectator" Tasting Notes:
"Detailed, offering notes of creamy oak, ripe apple, pear and spice, with a delicate finish. Drink now through 2020."

Elyse "Morsolli Vineyard" Zinfandel 2008 (Napa Valley)
Winery Tasting Notes:
"We have been making Zinfandel from the Morisoli Vineyard since 1987 and have been the only producer working with these grapes since 1988. The old vines, volcanic soil, Rutherford Bench terroir and field blend always create a truly distinctive Zinfandel."
"Wine Advocate" Tasting Notes:
"The 2008 Zinfandel Morisoli Vineyard is a compelling wine graced with expressive dark red fruit, flowers, mint and licorice. It shows gorgeous finesse, plenty of mid-palate richness and terrific overall balance. Sweet floral notes and succulent black cherries wrap around the finish."
Winemaker: Ray Coursen $35.95 -
Epoch "Authenticity" Red Wine 2010 (Paso Robles, CA)
Anticipated maturity: 2013-2017." $64.95 -
Epoch "Block B" Syrah 2010 (Paso Robles, CA)
Anticipated maturity: 2013-2017." $69.95 -
Gemstone Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 (Napa Valley)
"Wine Advocate" Tasting Notes:
"The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a big wine yet it also possesses plenty of balance and freshness. Ripe, silky tannins frame a core of expressive fruit. Floral notes add freshness on the polished finish. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2019."
Winemaker: Philippe Melka $150.00 -
Hamilton Russell Pinot Noir 2010 (South Africa)
"Ripe, juicy and nicely compact, with plum sauce, blackberry and cherry skin notes wound at the core while mouthwatering anise and singed apple wood notes run along the edges. Possesses impressive cut and persistence. Drink now through 2015. 1,000 cases imported."
Winemaker: Hamilton Russell $47.00 -
Kamen Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 (Sonoma County)
"Wine Advocate" Tasting Notes:
"The dense purple-colored 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon reveals abundant notes of volcanic ash, burning embers, black currants and blueberries. The quality of the oak is very high, but subtle, and the wine possesses soft tannins, full body, lots of concentration and moderate tannin. Three to four years of cellaring will be beneficial and this big 2008 should age nicely for two decades."
Winemaker: Mark Herold $75.00 -
Kobalt Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 (Napa Valley)
"Wine Advocate" Tasting Notes:
"The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon is super-impressive. A firm, full-bodied wine, it showcases the best of Coombsville in its powerful fruit and equally imposing yet well-balanced tannins. Black plums, black currants, mint, graphite, pencil shavings, violets and spices all flow through to the incisive, powerful finish. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025."
Winemaker: Mark Herold $89.95 -
Kongsgaard Chardonnay 2010 (Napa Valley, CA)
$82.50 -
La Sirena "Barrett Family" Syrah 2007 (Napa Valley)

The 2008 is a gracious, understated Cabernet that impresses for its balance, class and harmonious finish. The wine keeps getting better in the glass, as hints of tar, smoke and licorice flow through to the dense finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018."
Winemaker: Heidi Barrett $150.00 -
Lindstrom Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 (Napa Valley)
"Wine Advocate" Tasting Notes:
"The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon is plush, deep and inviting. Rich layers of blue and black fruit, spices, mint, white flowers and licorice wrap around the palate in this sensual, textured wine. The 2009 is fresh, vibrant and very young. It needs time to develop its aromatic complexity, but it is already very promising. This is a great effort from Lindstrom and winemaker Celia Welch. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024."
"Wine Spectator" Tasting Notes:
"Dense, dry and cedary, with mocha-laced dried currant, dried herb, black licorice and black tea flavors. Tight, focused and firmly tannic, but ending with a long, persistent finish. Best from 2013 through 2024."
Winemaker: Celia Welch $109.95 -
Marziano Abbona Barolo Terlo Ravera 2006 (Piedmont, Italy)

In other words, a quintessential Philippe Melka wine at an approachable price. The 2009 is 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot from vineyards in Soda Canyon, Pritchard Hill and Yountville. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2017."

Paul Hobbs Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 (Napa Valley)
Winery Tasting Notes:
"Our 2010 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon derives depth and breadth of character from the diverse terroir represented by State Lane, Beckstoffer Dr. Crane, Beckstoffer Las Piedras, Flat Rock and Stagecoach vineyards. Black garnet in hue, concentrated aromas of black currant, blackberry and lavender delight. Freshly cut flowers, cedar, caramel and violets entice the palate. The fruit is pure and elegant, displaying faceted layers of dark cherry, cassis and plum. Velvety tannins wave together with layers of milk cocoa, anise and graphite to create a charming and lengthy finish."
"Wine Advocate" Tasting Notes:
"The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley wraps around the palate with mocha, chocolate, violets and new leather. Despite its explosive personality, the straight Napa Valley bottling is pretty approachable for the vintage. I especially like the focus of the finish. In 2010, the Cabernet Sauvignon includes 6% Cabernet Franc. The vineyard sources are State Lane, Stagecoach and Mast. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025."
$88.50 -
Quilceda Creek Red Wine 2009 (Columbia Valley, WA)
Winemaker: Alex Golitzin $72.00 -
Revana Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 (Napa Valley)
Winery Tasting Notes:
"A supple blend of our Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the 2009 vintage is opulent and well-balanced. Dark and dense in color with aromas of lavender, cassis and earthy wild berry, this wine displays great depth. It boasts stunning concentration on the palate with dark cherry, cacao, coffee bean and a hint of caramel. Finishing with full-boded tannins, this wine exhibits an undeniable finesse."
"Wine Advocate" Tasting Notes:
"Bold, complex and quite ripe, with black raspberry and smoky spice aromas and cherry, toasty sage and herb flavors that pack a slight burn on the finish. For fans of the style. Drink now through 2016."
Winemaker: Heidi Barrett $148.95 -
Salvestrin "3D" Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 (Napa Valley)
Winery Notes:
"The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon 3D is a slightly down-sized version of the 2007. It is a big wine, rich, full-bodied, with a similar opaque purple color, loads of fruit, graphite, and licorice, and plenty of potential. It is a little less flamboyant than the 2007 but will probably age just as well and just as long (20-25 years)."
Winemaker: Rich Salvestrin $135.00 -
Samsara "Melville's" Syrah 2009 (Santa Rita Hills)
"Wine Advocate" Tasting Notes:
"A dazzling wine, the 2009 Syrah Melville bursts from the glass with black cherries, pepper, mint, violets and spices. It possesses striking varietal nuance and tons of character in an exuberant, flashy style I find highly appealing. Waves of fruit saturate the palate on a rich, creamy finish buffered by cooling veins of minerality. This is a wonderfully complete, harmonious wine from Samsara. The Melville is 100% Syrah, Estrella clone, fermented with 50% whole clusters and aged in French oak barrels, 25% new. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2019."
Winemaker: Chad Melville $39.99 -
Shafer "One Point Five" Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 (Stag's Leap District, CA)
"Wine Advocate" Tasting Notes:
"Mocha, tar, spices and tobacco all flow from the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five. A rich, intense wine, the 2010 impresses for its depth and sheer power. This is far from an easygoing Cabernet. I imagine the 2010 might still be going strong at age 20. The cold, late season yielded an utterly magnificent Cabernet that will challenge the top labels of many other properties. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025."
"Wine Spectator" Tasting Notes:
"Intense and concentrated, this red is typically rustic, tilting toward dark berry and cedar, with gripping, gutsy tannins that should appeal to those who like to chew on their wines. Best from 2014 through 2022." $79.95 -
Shafer "Red Shoulder Ranch" Chardonnay 2011 (Carneros)
"Wine Advocate" Tasting Notes:
"The 2011 Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch has a similar aromatic and flavor profile as the 2010 with more textural richness and oiliness because of the presence of botrytis in this vintage. I have to say, the 2011 is highly intriguing. It will be interesting to see where the wine goes over the coming years. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2017."

Stonestreet "Broken Road" Chardonnay 2010 (Sonoma County)
"Wine Advocate" Tasting Notes:
"The 2010 Chardonnay Broken Road is a textured wine graced with notable depth and richness. This is a slightly fatter style than the Upper Barn, but there is no shortage of minerality or vibrancy here. The Broken Road comes across as quite round and totally complete. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018."

Winemaker: Graham Werts $78.00 -
Stonestreet "Monolith" Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 (Sonoma County)

Turley "Hayne Vineyard" Petite Sirah 2010 (Napa Valley)
"Wine Advocate" Tasting Notes:
"A cool, inward wine, the 2010 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard is intensely saline and mineral-driven in personality. Sweet floral and spice notes add complexity to the beautifully delineated, energetic fruit. The Hayne brings together tension, power and depth, with serious length and extract. These vines were planted in 1953. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025."

Vineyard 29 "CRU" Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 (Napa Valley)
"Wine Advocate" Tasting Notes:
"One of the very best values in Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Cru bursts from the glass with dark red cherries, plums and tobacco. The 2010 is totally gorgeous from start to finish. There is more than pure vibrancy and freshness to support the generous, opulent fruit in this striking, beautifully delineated Cabernet Sauvignon. Winemaker Keith Emerson crafts the Cru bottling from a variety of vineyards across Napa Valley. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2022."
Winery Tasting Notes:
"Our 2010 Cru Cabernet is a deep purple tinged wine of extraordinary depth and complexity. Primary aromas of dried red currant, ripe blackberries and milk chocolate give way to layers of fresh tobacco leaf, dried lavender and cedar. A generous palate offers roasted coffee, mocha, brambly black fruits and a touch of black pepper that slip seamlessly into a long supple finish. Stunning in mouthfeel, this profoundly textured wine will leave you wanting more. Well-integrated and balanced tannins give firm structure to this wine at release, yet are powerful enough to give our 2010 Cru many years of life. Open and enjoy our 2010 Cru Cabernet now and over the next 10 years."

Beckstoffer "Melee" Red Wine 2010 (California)
Winery Tasting Notes:
"The 2010 vintage of Melée Grenache is a beautiful deep ruby/plum color with a striking wet polished garnet quality in the glass. The aromas are unmistakably Grenache with wonderful notes of freshly picked rose petal, early season plum and Luxardo Cherry along with scents of shale, new leather and a hint of tobacco. This wine explodes on the palate with focused flavors of currant, licorice, blue iris and ripe black cherry. Complimenting these flavors are supple, yet firm, tannins and soaring acidity that produce a long lasting, elegant and linear finish."
"Wine Spectator" Tasting Notes:
"Delivers a core of ripe raspberry and blackberry that is firm, with crisp acidity and flinty tannins. Most impressive for the long, pure and focused finish. Drink now through 2022."

"The 2010 Chardonnay Estate is captivating in its beauty. All the elements are very nicely balanced in this soft, textured Chardonnay.
"Ripe, juicy and nicely compact, with plum sauce, blackberry and cherry skin notes wound at the core while mouthwatering anise and singed apple wood notes run along the edges. Possesses impressive cut and persistence. Drink now through 2015. 1,000 cases imported."

Marziano Abbona Barolo Terlo Ravera 2006 (Piedmont, Italy)
Best from 2014 through 2022." $79.95

Quivet "Napa Valley" Cabernet Sauvignon 2010
Winery Tasting Notes:
"New to the Quivet Cellars lineup, this Cabernet Sauvignon blend is comprised of several well known vineyards located in Rutherford, Calistoga and St. Helena. While we are known for our single vineyard wines, we feel this wine captures the essence of Napa Valley by introducing more facets and layers due to the complexities introduced from each site. 2010 Quivet Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
Dark garnet to the rim with a slight purple hue, the clarity of this wine shows off its overall purity and depth. Scents of dark and red raspberries, spice box, herbs of Provence and mocha set the stage for rollercoaster of complexities that combine with a texturally expressive mid-palate framed by a moderately tannic structure. Pure, silky and focused, this is the stunning example of what combining the above Napa Valley appellations can achieve.
Allow 6 months of bottle age to integrate the components and look for it shine in 4-6 years. Stock up, as this will be a 'one trick pony' and will be replaced with one of our new single vineyard wines coming in 2011."
