A Photo Tour of Old Town Auburn

Photography by Keith Sutter

Sacramento Street after a hard rain: This is the view down Sacramento Street after our first hard rain of the fall of 2004. The red brick building at the end is the California Club, with Carpe Vino to the right.

Courthouse dome in the clouds: No trickery here. Keith shot this photo just as a rain storm, complete with hail, passed through Auburn, creating a striking backdrop for the city's top landmark.

Outside the Wine Cave

The Wine Mine Patio: The narrow space between the shop and Wine Mine is often crowded with wine drinkers during the warm summer nights in Northern California.

Commercial Street's antique row: Anchored by Mary Belle's restaurant at the bottom is Old Town's row of antique stores. The third building up is the former Placer County Bank. It was robbed in the Spring of 1904 by 20-year-old Adolph Weber, who buried the loot in the family barn. When his father uncovered the money and confronted his son, Adolph killed him. Then he went inside the family home and dispatched his mother, sister and brother. He set the house on fire to cover the crimes, but was quickly arrested. The murders were commited 100 years ago, on November 4, 1904.

A tribute to Claude Chana: This concrete statue is a memorial to Claude Chana, a panner credited with discovering gold in1848 in the ravine that would eventually become Auburn.

Doorway detail: Keith Sutter captures a slice of crumbling Old Town Auburn. Somehow, the place continues to stand and thrive.

Above: At left, a view of Old Town Auburn's firehouse, the oldest west of the Mississippi, and another view of the Claude Chana monument is shown at left.
